The Stay Put Kippah
When my twins turned three, they needed kippot (kippahs or yarmulkes, traditional head coverings) for their preschool activities. I wanted to design something unique that would stay securely on their heads without the need for clips, be easily washable, and be fun for kids to wear. This project is perfect for knitters looking to create festive, personalized kippot for children and adults alike!
Our kippah knitting pattern is available in multiple sizes, ranging from preschooler to adult, making it a versatile choice for the whole family. Once you master this easy-to-follow pattern, you’ll be able to knit these charming kippot quickly and efficiently. For this pattern, you'll need to use a double strand of DK weight mercerized cotton yarn along with size 3 (3.25mm) straight and circular needles. This combination creates a stiff, firm crown that fits well and retains its shape beautifully.
The pattern involves working back and forth using short rows to elegantly shape the crown of the kippah. You'll finish the design with an aesthetically pleasing edging that uses a single strand, knitted in the round. Throughout the pattern, clear notes and guidance are provided for adjusting both the needle size and stitch count, ensuring that your kippah will fit snugly on any head size, no matter how unique!
To successfully knit this delightful kippah, you should be familiar with basic techniques such as knitting, purling, making short rows, knitting two stitches together, and picking up and knitting stitches. This project offers a wonderful opportunity for knitters of all levels to practice their skills while creating a meaningful and functional item. Whether for your twins, family gatherings, or gifts, these stylish kippot will be cherished for many years to come!
