Tide Turner Shawl
Having always lived close to the sea, it is perhaps no surprise that I find endless inspiration in the rhythmic waves, the invigorating salty air, the mesmerizing changing colors of the water, the unique shapes of shells, and the intricate patterns of tides drawn out on sandy beaches. The regularity of the tides, much like the soothing rhythm of knitting, has been a calming influence in my life, especially during the challenging period when I received a diagnosis of Tourette Syndrome, a neurological tic disorder. For me, knitting has evolved into a wonderfully meditative activity. Whether it’s an occasional row of intricate color work or, as showcased in this design, engaging cables that require deeper concentration, knitting helps me refocus drifting or intrusive thoughts back to the present in a mindful way. This triangular shawl pattern is crafted from side-to-side, transitioning gracefully from the smallest point to another smallest point. Its beautiful cable design reaches a “high tide” in the center, then elegantly retraces its steps back to the cast-off edge. I hope you will find this shawl's soft, squishy ribbing not only a comfort to make but also to wear. This pattern is perfect for knitters seeking a creative outlet that echoes the cycles of nature. Whether you’re knitting for yourself or gifting it to someone who needs a reminder that the tide will always turn, and that your ebb will once again become a flow, this shawl serves as a beautiful metaphor for resilience. Dive into this experience to find joy in knitting while connecting with the soothing spirit of the sea.
