Tiling Fish

This stunning patchwork blanket features one of Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher’s renowned tessellations, showcasing a whimsical design that adds a touch of art to your knitting collection. The striking fish motif is knit separately and meticulously sewn together, allowing for a unique and personalized approach to your blanket project.

Each fish is shaped using a variety of knitting techniques, including ribbing, seed stitch, and garter stitch, along with short rows to create stunning dimensionality. All these techniques are comprehensively documented in two detailed charts, making it easy for knitters of all skill levels to follow along.

To support your stitching journey, an illustrated appendix provides clear explanations of all the techniques used in the project, including how to sew the fish together and navigate the process of cutting and steeking. If you want to conserve ink, you can choose to print only the pattern directions, which are conveniently contained on pages 1-8, excluding the appendix.

The straight edges of the blanket are achieved through cutting, a technique that may seem daunting but is simple when approached correctly. To create a rectangular shape, you will need to cut a minimum of 12 fish, while producing a square shape requires 24 fish. For those who are open to offsetting the fish after cutting, it is possible to work with just 6 fish; however, this method is somewhat tricky, and I highly recommend practicing with a paper model first to master the technique.

To finish off your masterpiece, a beautiful stocking stitch edging adds a polished touch, making this blanket not only a functional piece but also a striking work of art. The sample was knitted using Till Kampes yarn, and we’ve provided substitute yarn options below for your convenience.

This patchwork blanket is more than just a knitting project; it's an opportunity to explore your creativity while honoring the artistry of Escher. Perfect for both experienced knitters and adventurous beginners, it promises to be a fulfilling endeavor that results in a cozy, visually stunning blanket for your home or as a thoughtful gift.
