Soap Sacks are a fantastic way to utilize your cotton yarn stash while making a positive impact on your community. I was inspired to contribute but found it challenging to locate knitting patterns for soap sacks, so I decided to create and share a simple option for fellow knitters. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crafter, this pattern will provide you with the perfect project.

One of my favorite features of this soap sack pattern is how easily a simple yarn over transforms a garter stitch swatch into a thick, textured weave. This makes it not only an adorable addition to your bath routine but also an excellent gift for friends and family. The project is perfect for beginners or for those leisurely evenings spent knitting in front of the TV. If you can knit a single stitch, you can absolutely make this stylish and functional soap sack!

While most soap sack patterns are typically written to measure 6” across and 8” tall, I’ve customized this design for a horizontal format. You will start by casting on a sufficient number of stitches to create an 8” width (which will be folded in half), and then knit for 6” from the cast-on edge. This unique orientation not only adds visual interest but also maximizes the functionality of the soap sack.

For the bind-off, a crochet hook can be employed to ensure a little extra elasticity, but it also serves as a handy tool for creating a chain loop at the top of the sack. If you prefer using an i-cord or any other knitting technique for the top loop, the crochet hook can be easily omitted. This allows for flexibility and personal expression in your crafting!

So gather your cotton yarn, grab your needles, and let’s start creating these beautiful soap sacks together. Not only will you enjoy the process of making, but you'll also be contributing to a sustainable future, perfect for gifting or donating to local shelters. Happy knitting!
