While technically constructed from the tip down (or tip up, depending on your perspective), the beginning method resembles my popular First-Time Toe-Up Sock pattern. This allows for a seamless transition between projects!
**Construction Details**: The mittens are started tip down on 4 double-pointed needles—3 holding stitches and 1 working. The base begins with a simple stockinette rectangle, making it easy for knitters of all levels to follow and enjoy. Additionally, the design incorporates an afterthought thumb, allowing for a versatile and customizable fit every time.
**Recommended Needle Size**: To achieve the best results, we recommend using needles that are at least one size smaller than what the yarn ball band suggests—particularly when working with sweater yarns. In this pattern, I used size 6 US needles with Nashua Vignette and Cascade Cloud 9 aran-weight yarns (in blue/green stripe and solid green), while opting for size 5 with the Noro Silk Garden worsted-weight yarn. Since I knit firmly, you may want to consider using a size smaller for a denser, more durable fabric that will stand the test of time.
Be sure to also have a set of DPNs that are two sizes smaller than those used for the main fabric, specifically for knitting the ribbing at the cuff of the mittens.
