Trabilein
*The Trabant, meaning “companion,” is an iconic little car that was produced in Eastern Germany in the years following the Second World War. Known affectionately as the “poor man’s car,” the Trabant was an affordable option for many, although the waiting lists could be incredibly long—sometimes lasting up to 10 years! This charming vehicle is compact, fitting just about four people, and although it doesn’t reach high speeds, it boasts the most delightful 2-stroke engine sound that brings a smile to every enthusiast's face.
I have dreamt of owning a Trabi ever since my unforgettable summer holiday in Hungary at the age of 17. At that time, I didn’t have a driver’s license yet, but my father and I envisioned a road trip back to one of the Eastern European countries to find me a Trabant once I earned my license. The idea of restoring such a car from scratch excited me, and I fantasized about it for years. Life took its course, and I didn’t acquire my beloved Trabi until 15 years later, when I finally purchased a beautifully restored model in Denmark.
This shawl is my heartfelt tribute to my little Trabi. The yarn features the authentic Trabant sky blue, a color that perfectly captures the essence of this beloved car while also celebrating my journey with it. The wrap not only keeps you warm and stylish but also serves as a nod to nostalgia and craftsmanship. Perfect for both seasoned knitters and adventurous beginners, this pattern will guide you in creating a unique piece that reflects a charming blend of retro charm and modern comfort. Dive into this knitting project and embrace the joy of creating something special that holds a personal story, much like the Trabant itself.
