Wanna-Bee
Kiwiana Knitting Pattern: Wanna-Bee (I Wanna Be a Buzzy Bee™)
Introducing Wanna-Bee, a delightful Kiwiana knitting pattern inspired by the iconic Buzzy Bee™, a beloved toy in New Zealand since the early 1940s. Originally crafted by H (Hec) E Ramsey Limited in Auckland, the Buzzy Bee™ has become a cherished part of Kiwi culture, alongside their famous Marylou™ doll. With its charming design, the Buzzy Bee™ has captured the hearts of generations, and it's no surprise that we want to bring it into the world of knitting.
Despite the immense popularity of this nostalgic toy, a knitting pattern was difficult to find, which inspired me to create my own tribute – the Wanna-Bee pattern. This fun and engaging project allows you to replicate the charm of the original Buzzy Bee™ through lovely knitwork while infusing a modern touch.
The tremendous success of the Wanna-Bee pattern has sparked a vibrant collection of additional 'cousin' patterns, each celebrating its unique theme. These include:
- US Bee - A patriotic Stars and Stripes G-Bee inspired by the American flag
- Union Jack Bees - Featuring the flags of England and Scotland
- O Canada Bee - A stunning representation of the Canadian flag
- Rug-Bee - Inspired by the Rugby World Cup 2015
- Thistle Bee - A sweet homage to Scotland's beautiful heather
Additionally, I've designed several bespoke one-off patterns, including the A S Bee representing ASB Bank in New Zealand, the Wimblebee for Wimbledon enthusiasts, Diversibee to celebrate Gay Pride, and the Irn Bru Bee, a heartfelt tribute to Scotland's iconic Irn Bru drink.
Important Note: Please be aware that there was an error in the body front instructions for the straight needle version of the Wanna-Bee pattern. The corrected instruction should read: ## Incr, k7, incr (11 sts). Ensure you follow this update for a successful knitting experience!
Whether you're a seasoned knitter or a beginner looking for a fun project, the Wanna-Bee pattern offers an engaging experience that celebrates New Zealand's rich cultural heritage. Grab your knitting needles and join the fun of creating your very own Wanna-Bee today!
