Wengwings
Experience the joy of knitting with our delightful “Wengwings” stranded colourwork socks, designed to be knitted top-down using a traditional flap-and-gusset heel. These charming socks are not only fun to create but also incredibly cozy to wear, making them a perfect addition to any knitting enthusiast's collection. The whimsical name “Wengwings” comes from my two-year-old, who affectionately referred to the birds adorning the socks!
This knitting pattern is available in three sizes to ensure a perfect fit for everyone: Small (suitable for foot circumferences of 7-7.5 inches), Medium (for foot circumferences of 8-8.5 inches), and Large (designed for foot circumferences of 9-9.5 inches). It’s important to note that the ankle circumference closely matches the foot circumference; however, keep in mind that stranded colourwork typically has less stretch than plain stocking stitch.
The pattern tension is crucial for achieving the right fit: you will need to knit at a tension of 8 stitches per 1 inch (2.5 cm) using 2.5 mm (US 1.5) needles across the stranded leg section, and 8.5 stitches per 1 inch using 2.25 mm (US 1) needles for the stocking stitch foot. This careful attention to gauge will help you create beautifully-fitting socks.
The charming penguin pattern is presented in a clear, user-friendly chart format, so familiarity with reading stranded colourwork charts is essential. Knitters should also know how to work in the round and master the Kitchener stitch for grafting the toes seamlessly. Don’t worry if you’re new to colourwork; this pattern is suitable for adventurous beginners and experienced knitters alike!
For the project, you will need up to 275 yards of your main colour yarn—such as the lovely blue featured in the sample—and up to 150 yards of a contrasting background colour, like the crisp white shown. Our socks are crafted in fingering weight yarn, offering a lightweight and comfortable finish. Additionally, make sure to have needles sized to achieve the specified pattern tension, along with 2 stitch markers and a darning needle for weaving in ends.
If you’re looking to enhance your knitting skills and create a pair of vibrant “Wengwings” socks that are sure to be a conversation starter, this pattern is a must-try. Dive into this fun and engaging project today!
