Flight Formation ... a shawl
Join our exciting [Knit-A-Long (KAL)][1] starting in June 2013, hosted by my beloved local yarn store, [Dog House Yarns][2]. Come and immerse yourself in the fun as we create this beautiful lace shawl together! Perfect for knitters of all skill levels, this project features an easy-to-memorize lace pattern consisting of a repeat of 8 stitches over 8 rows, making it an excellent first knitting lace project.
Worked seamlessly from the top down, the shawl's enchanting "birds" design increases as the piece grows, culminating in a lovely garter-stitch band. This versatile shawl can be worn in multiple stylish ways, each flattering and elegant! You will need approximately 380 yards of fingering weight wool; for the sample, Poems Sock in the delightful colorway “Cruise” was used. This shawl is not only a fun knit, but it also leverages the unique self-striping yarns available on the market to create stunning visual effects.
The pattern includes both charted and written-out directions, catering to different knitting preferences. Here are some additional notes to keep in mind as you start your project:
• The shawl begins with a “garter tab” and gracefully blooms into three stitch panels with a 2-stitch spacer between the increase points.
• Increases for the shawl are created through yarn overs (YO), adding an airy quality to the design.
• Every 8 rows, you'll introduce a new set of “birds,” adding 2 stitches from the marker you’ve placed; each tier will feature an extra “bird” as the shawl grows.
• The combination of a simple repeat and graceful increases makes this shawl an enjoyable knitting experience that will leave you with a stunning finished piece.
