Granny's Mittens
Discover the charm of traditional knitting with our delightful fairisle fingerless mitts pattern, inspired by a cherished pair gifted to my mother, affectionately known as Granny to her grandchildren and GG to her great-grandchildren. Many years ago, Granny's school friend, whose mother hailed from the picturesque Shetland Islands, presented her with this unique pair of fingerless mitts. Although their exact origins remain a mystery, we believe they were lovingly crafted by a skilled contract knitter from Shetland, working without a formal pattern. The gloves exhibit some endearing imperfections, with interesting mistakes and slight variations in shape, adding to their character and charm.
Now, I'm excited to share my reproduction of these lovely gloves using Uradale organic Shetland yarn in natural colors, making them not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. If you’re a beginner looking to dive into the world of fairisle knitting, this project is perfect for you. It’s quick and rewarding, allowing you to hone your skills while creating a functional accessory. Plus, it’s an excellent way to use up those odds and ends of yarn you have stashed away! For a complete pair of fingerless gloves, you’ll need around 100 meters of the main color, along with smaller quantities of assorted colors for the fairisle design.
These fingerless gloves are incredibly versatile and practical for a variety of winter activities. Whether you're tending to your garden, clipping the lead on your dog, brewing a warm cup of tea at the beach, or even showcasing your skills on the accordion, these mitts will keep your hands warm while providing the dexterity you need.
