Maribou

$5.00

The Maribou stork, known for its unique and somewhat peculiar appearance, is perhaps one of the ugliest birds in the avian world, featuring a warty pink face and large wings. Despite their unusual looks, these birds stand about 3 feet tall, gracefully perching on the tops of narrow street lights and soaring in majestic arcs across the sky. One of my favorite drives takes me through downtown Nairobi, where I admire the Maribou storks that have made this area their home. They have built impressive nests in the trees that line the main road, creating a stunning spectacle that I always look forward to seeing.

Inspired by my fondness for these remarkable birds, I created a cozy Maribou-colored wrap shawl that beautifully mimics their grand wingspans. This design features lazy cables that end in delicate points, reminiscent of feathered wingtips, offering a whimsical yet elegant look. The wrap is not only designed to celebrate the beauty of Maribou storks but also to provide warmth and comfort for the wearer.

This versatile knitting pattern is primarily designed for DK weight yarn, but its flexibility allows for successful knitting with worsted weight as well as lace weight yarn held double! This means you can choose your favorite yarn and still achieve a stunning result. The pattern is suitable for knitters of various skill levels and delivers a cozy yet sophisticated accessory that complements a wide range of outfits.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate. This pattern includes essential skills such as provisional cast-on, simple increases, intricate cable techniques, short rows, and the important finishing touch of weaving in ends.

Whether you're a seasoned knitter looking for a new challenge or a beginner eager to improve your skills, the Maribou wrap shawl pattern is perfect for expanding your knitting repertoire while creating a unique piece that pays homage to the remarkable Maribou stork.
